Goldilocks

Apple has set the tech world abuzz once again, unveiling the iPad Mini at their latest event yesterday. Per CNN, “the iPad Mini measures 7.9 inches diagonally and is 5.3 inches wide – pocketable.” This is in contrast to the iPad, which measures 9.5 inches by 7.3 inches. In addition to being conveniently small, the device also weighs half as much as a full-sized iPad also.

But let’s be real here, do people really need this device? In a world where many people own multiple devices including (but not limited to) smartphones, laptops, e-readers, music players and tablet computers, will there be a demand for the iPad Mini, and in terms of technology hierarchy, where does this device fit in?

It is widely believed that the device was introduced to compete with e-reader tablets like the Kindle Fire and the Nook. In size and functionality, it is very comparable to these devices, but the price point is much higher than that of either the Kindle or the Nook. Apple is planning on selling the device for $329, which is significantly more expensive than either the Nook or the Kindle. In fact, it is only $79 cheaper than a full-sized iPad.

The announcement of the device was met with a variety of opinions ranging from very favorable to less enthusiastic. An article in CNN’s technology blog features a variety of reader opinions on the device, and the reactions are certainly amusing.

What are some of these perspectives? There are those who are skeptical, calling it a marketing gimmick on the part of Apple to generate sales over the busy holiday season. Some are excited by the size and portability the device offers. Some hardcore Apple followers (or the tech buffs, as CNN refers to them) are anticipating the new technological innovations the device offers. Other Apple followers are annoyed that this is the product Apple is putting manpower and resources into producing. Yet others are neutral, concluding that they don’t personally have an interest in the device but see why there is a general interest.

So will the device gain traction, and what audience is most likely to purchase the gadget? Those who are in pursuit of the Goldilocks device: those who say the iPhone is too small and the iPad is too big. The device is ideal since it offers the functionality of the iPad in a smaller and more portable device. Apple is guaranteed to find millions of people for whom the device is just right!
