from the Plum Voice IVR Glossary
A switched telephone network is a communications network in which any caller can be connected to any other user through the use of messaging, circuits, or packet switching. The most common example of this is the public switched telephone network (PSTN) that through a series of hardware and software is interconnected within switching centers and allows any telephone in the world to communicate with any other telephone in the world. Landline and mobile phones are both included in the PTSN and the network itself is almost entirely digital. The PTSN‘s components include telephone lines, fiber optic cables, microwave transmission links, cellular networks, communications satellites, undersea telephone cables that are all connected worldwide through switching centers.
