Also known as a terminal symbol, a token is a part of grammar in a VoiceXML application that defines words or other entities that may be spoken. In terms of speech recognition, tokens are typically utilized to recognize a language an application is using, but it can also be any string that the speech recognizer can convert into a phonetic representation. In XML content, any unmarked text within a rule definition, aside from example phrases or tag content, is considered to be token content. Typically, a token element may contain character data only. All token content in XML form is treated as characters in XML. XML developers can streamline their documents by avoiding characters and forms in tokens that do not have obvious pronunciations in the language, including acronyms, and abbreviations.
