from the Plum Voice IVR Glossary
The commonly accepted abbreviation for hypertext transfer protocol, HTTP is a protocol that facilitates the communication transfer of hypertext-based files between both local and remote systems. HTTP is the transfer protocol for data communications occurring on the World Wide Web, and operates by following a request-response protocol within a client-server computing model. The web browser acts as the client while the application hosting the web browser acts as the server. In order to achieve successful communication, the client must submit a request message in HTTP to the server, which in turn provides a response message containing information about completion status. HTTP is a protocol that facilitates swift communication between the web browser and the server.
