from the Plum Voice IVR Glossary
Typically referred to by its acronym, HyperText Markup Language is the main markup language for web pages. Much like VXML in voice applications, HTML is the building block on which web pages are constructed. HTML is written using elements that consist of tags that offer commands that are enclosed in angled brackets. Web browsers then read HTML documents and decode the markup language into text, audio, and multimedia presentations that are readable by end users. The back end coding tags that compose HTML script are then interpreted by the browser and displayed in readable fonts and images. Like VoiceXML, the World Wide Web Consortium maintains HTML standards.
