DID stands for direct inward dialing, and is a feature that is offered to PBX system users by telephone companies. It provides customers with trunk lines so that calls may be forwarded and the dialed destination number is contacted and reached. Calls placed to a PBX typically result in the dialed destination number being transmitted so that the PBX can route the call to the specified desired location. Direct inward call routing allows call routing to each extension without the need for either an operator or an attendant. In order to develop a fully functioning PBX system, it is recommended that DID be combined with direct outward dialing so that direct outbound calling is also allowed within the feature.
