Within telecommunications, disaster recovery refers to the process, policies, and procedures put in to place in the event of a system failure (either natural or human-induced). Disaster recovery is put in to place to ensure that critical technological infrastructure is not compromised and remains operational in the event of a catastrophe. In the last several decades, businesses have become critically dependent on IT infrastructure to power all parts of their business. Disaster recovery procedures insure redundancy, and aim to guarantee nearly 100% uptime (most companies aim for 99.999% uptime guarantees). The ultimate goal of a disaster recovery is to protect data and maintain critical functionality within system and application processes. Disaster recovery procedures typically contain strategies that focus on preventative measures, detective measures, and corrective measures.
