Fault Tolerance

Within telecommunications, fault tolerance is an operational design that enables some components of a system to remain functional, even after others fail. Fault tolerance system designs typically focus on maintaining continued power to elemental components of a system’s infrastructure in the events that the system experiences a catastrophic event and fails. Fault tolerant system designs target the most critical of system components, and while operations will most likely not occur at their normal level, the most vital components will have data preserved and resist complete shutdown. One of the main methods engineers recognize in guaranteeing fault tolerance is the establishing of redundancy within all critical system components.
