Android is a Linux-based operating system developed by Google that powers both mobile devices (typically smartphones) and tablet computers. Google Inc. financially backed the development of the software, which was unveiled for distribution in 2007. Android code has been released for open-source consumption, and developers are able to use the code to author applications that can be uploaded to the Google app store. The Android operating system is unique because it accommodates multiple carriers who use it to power their devices. All hardware operating the Android operating system meets certain features and specifications pertaining to qualities like the handset layout, storage, messaging and connectivity among others. As of the beginning of 2012, Android had 59% of the smartphone market share worldwide, with over 400 million devices having been activated and a million activations per day.
