DNIS stands for Dialed Number Identification Service. It is the number the caller dialed. The DNIS, along with the ANI, are delivered to the IVR by the telco carrier for every phone call. The DNIS and ANI are the only information sent to the IVR at the time of circuit establishment on a T1 (specifically ISDN-PRI or E&M T1s). Moreover, the DNIS is used by the IVR to determine the ultimate destination for a call: since a call for a given DNIS can come over any of the T1's channels, the IVR needs the DNIS to correlate the call with a specific phone application.

In the US, the DNIS is typically a 10-digit string.
