Telephony

Telephony

Telephony relates to the technologies around which telephones, faxes, and other electronic audio transmission equipment is based. It is commonly used in contrast to IT/data network technologies. Traditionally, an institution's telephony infrastructure was managed separately from its IT infrastructure. However, over the past decade, the two infrastructure sets have significantly converged and utilize the same or similar technologies. In the case of telephony, much of the transmission is done over data networks. In the case of IT, data networks are now interconnected via the Internet which is largely built on circuits that were primarily used for telephony purposes two decades ago.
