DTMF Grammar

VoiceXML can be programmed to detect caller input through the use of Dual Tone Multi-Frequency (DTMF) grammars. DTMF is the system used by the public switched telephone network (PTSN) to recognize tones produced by a telephone keypad.

The automated dialogs created by VoiceXML IVR can detect and report numeric characters as they are received by the VoiceXML platform. DTMF input from a caller can be used to navigate a menu, enter an account number, key in a password, or perform an action that requires caller input.

Plum implements the SRGS+XML grammar format for both Voice and DTMF grammars as well as JSpeech Grammar Format (JSGF). Please refer to the W3C Speech Recognition Grammar Specification or the JSGF Specification for specific programming information.
