from the Plum Voice IVR Glossary
In a VoiceXML application, field specifies an input item to be gathered from the user. A grammar element must be qualified within a field, or an error will occur. The grammar elements that can be specified within a field are name, condition, expression, type, slot, and modal. Name indicates the form item variable in the dialog scope that will hold the result. Condition is an expression that must be evaluated as true after conversion to Boolean, in order for the form to be visited. Expression is the initial value of the form item variable. Type specifies the type of field, or the name of the built-in grammar type. Slot indicates the name of the grammar slot used to populate the variable. Modal is the field that defaults to false. If the field is false, all active grammars are turned on while collecting the modal field. If it is true, only the field’s grammars are enabled, and all others are temporarily disabled.
